Who Is Anuradha Pandey?

Yes who is Anuradha Pandey and what the hell is she smoking? George Smathers was a bigot, a racist, and at least in my opinion, they did the right thing in not honoring his life. This 'reporter' seems fixated on George Smathers 'donor hat' but she fails to comment on a legacy that allowed for black children to be kept from white schools and for a legacy that allowed Blacks to be addressed as niggers, that allowed blacks to be spat on at white lunch counters, that allowed blacks to be arrested for where they rode on public buses, that forbade blacks drinking from white water fountains, that shorted blacks from their right to the polls, that divided this nation on the basis of skin color.

As this fucking idiot trashes senate for its record of silly bills, she then attacks senators of not passing bills that make it to the floor because then that would be "disrespectful," what a fuckin idiot! Then "Anuradha, The Village Idiot" tries to sound GDI by raising fears of the Greek Machine taking over SG; then she rallies for online voting which has been insisted by key Indies (myself added to those...) is not a sure-fire tool to increase votes (e.g. FSU); finally "Anuradha, The Village Idiot" lashes out with, " I don't advocate getting rid of SG entirely, but it really needs to be shaved down to be more efficient" -- which immediately made me wonder if this fictitious character has ever been to a Senate Budget Committee meeting, sat in on a budget, or witnessed the work of the Senate Allocations Commmittee. Her rhetoric drips of Turlington Plaza campaign day hype, she goes on to make mention of the A&S Fees and concludes her stab-at-how-SG-works with a charge that students don't care, students won't vote.

I can't wait to read the next story by "Anuradha, The Village Idiot."

Next Entry I will do my best to cover the return of the PANTS Party...how exciting.

I had the same reaction, complete disgust. I like the "Day Without" experiment (Day Without TV, Day Without Shopping), and would love to see a Day Without SG. There'd be no campus busses, the gyms and computer labs would be dark, student orgs would not have events, the tables and poles around plaza, turlington and reitz would be empty and closed off. There are tons more services and assests that I could list. It would be a good day for the the people who throw stones at SG to see just how much the "waste of 12 million dollars" does for the students and the university.

Everything you just mentioned would have its budget allocated by the administration if SG weren't there. It's not like no SG equals no A & S Fee.

The most important aspect of SG, the part the administration can't do, is acting as the voice of students and lobbying on their behalf (not just to the State and Fed).

As Bruce pointed out, yes I could be functional with SG non-existent. All they do is take the money from Financial Services and put it in RTS's hand (not even sure if they do it). Its not like RTS is a SG operated organization. Many departments have their own computer labs (with free printing, both with quota and no-quota, mind you), and they seem to be functioning much better than the SG ones with a line outside. Student orgs would get their money from the administration instead of going through the immature and inexperienced SG people who are always learning their job. And unfortunately neither the Reitz Union nor the Recreation division is run by bunch of 21 yr olds.

And hey Christian, how about going out and humiliating all our grandparents. After all, they did not only do nothing, but were actually the racist people who voted someone like George Smathers into office. Gosh, the SG kids should pass an initiative blaming their grandparents for this crime against humanity.

At the current time, you all may be right that the administration would allocate the funds, but if SG has never existed, there would be no organizations receiving funding, there would be vastly different gyms, there would be no Gator Ones, no tables or banner poles, no computer lab or free printing, no special events months, no IBC or La Casita, etc, etc, etc. The administrations priorities are not the students and for all of the grumbling that is thrown out there, I say each of you is vastly uninformed and none of you have any idea what the Student Body President does on a daily basis as far as advocacy goes. Bruce is correct in his column today that from the moment a president takes office, he or she is the voice of the students, however, Bruce has missed one key point: a president must work to build bridges with administrators in order to get anything done with students, just as a candidate must build bridges with vastly different communities and groups in order to become president. If all a president does is irrationally fight the administration, then the students will have lost their voice for it will have simply become an annoyance to administrators. So I ask Bruce and the rest of you, what has the students' voice been lost on this year? And beyond that, what have you done to contact John Boyles or another officer to discover what SG has done on that front before you make your all-encompassing criticisms. Finally, how would you have done it differently to "make the students' voice heard?" (And beyond that question, what I would really like to know is, if you are so great and really want to see change, why have you not brought forth your ideas and made a difference, whether you hold the title of sbp or not, you are a student and the student body president hasa duty to listen to you.) I will leave you with a toast: Here's to actually making a difference instead of bitching and moaning for your own personal gain!

I have my own thoughts on the subject.

How about minus grades anon 7:47? When something is so universally opposed by the students as minus grades, Boyles should have been able to do something about it. Instead, all that happened was a Senate resolution, one that was ignored. That was a time when the SG executives had a duty to step up and fight for the students; how well did that work out?

Just because John hasn't made any big public announcements about minus grades doesn't mean he has done nothing. By not staging a ralley everytime the university does something, he has maintained respectability and the ear of Bernie and the rest of the admin and they earnestly listen to him.

They listen to him by ignoring the student's wishes on every big issue that comes up? Really, what have they listened to him on?

Hmm...someone pointed out this blog entry to me and I must say, Christian Duque excels in ad hominem attacks. Gator definitely proved themselves to be more professional than this.

And yes, I'm the treasurer of a student organization so I'm perfectly well aware of how the budget committees work.
