Should Gator Sit This One Out?

I for one believe the Gator Party has run out of second chances. Between the tasteless mass-email to the Indian Student Association (which many attribute to it), the ambiguous mass-mailing to the Black Student Union, and the arrest of several of its members, including it's second-in-command, I believe it's time for Gator to sit this one out.

Patricia Telles-Irvin, the Vice President of Student Affairs must act in a way that sends a clear and decisive message to the Student Body. Student Government has been on a mission for many years to gain the respect and hopefully, eventually, the trust of the students. What kind of a message will the Madam Vice President send if her boss preaches drying out campus yet she turns a blind eye to underage alcohol consumption in a student political party - the party currently in control of Student Government?

Patricia Telles-Irvin should also avoid naivety in this matter. Was this a 'party of five?' or was this 'party of five' a party of a larger party? Redundant, huh? But it makes a huge difference in the scheme of things.

Patricia Telles-Irvin & the UF Administration, the same administration that forbade Independent Leader Sam Miorelli from registering the Swamp Party name, is now presented with a very serious situation. Will they remand this injustice to the (Gator Party - powered) [student] kangaroo courts - or - will they 'convene a committee...to meet in 2019...to evaluate the situation retroactively'.....OR will they practice due diligence and actually fuckin RULE against the GOD DAMN SYSTEM FOR A CHANGE?

Wait, so you're suggesting that because five students arrested for underage drinking, a practically negligible criminal offense in this day and age, happened to be members of the same political party, that the entire political party should be disenfranchised?

And you want to be a lawyer? Good Lord. I'd love to hear your opinion on whether the entire Democratic Party should've been forced to "sit out" the 1970 elections because of Ted Kennedy's substantially more criminal alcohol-related offense.

Party of Five was a good show. They should bring it back along with 90210.

The legal world is a world of mind games so your jibbing doesn't phase me.

What I'm trying to determine is if the '5' were there on their own or as part of a larger party (e.g. a Gator Party night out).

Is that too confusing for ya love?

duque,

you regularly post comments that attack you. most of them are filled with profanity and mindless blabber; you're very fair.

i'm glad to see that the truth of my comments is respected here, unlike over at SwampFrontLawn.

I'm a new faithful reader.

this election is going to be a bigger joke than bruce haupt was.

Bruce Haupt kept the movement alive when several other good Independents either sold out, were momentarily confused, or quite simply sat the whole election out.

Pants ran two solid campaigns and gave us Frank Bracco, so shut up.

Please, the individuals arrested will get in trouble and probably lose their spots on the slate. The party as a whole will be fine though, it's not Gator's fault that a few individuals got in trouble for drinking after a meeting.

The administration is torn. Make no mistake.

On the one hand it benefits them to protect the Gator Party because they LOVE how impossibly dumb and inept their leadership is. They ADORE their lack of questioning about their decision making process and the final decisions made. They MELT at the fact that the Gator Party doesn't represent any real student interests but only the interests of the Gator Party which leaves the administration to operate unchecked by its customer base (the student body).

BUT (there's always a but), the Greeks are giving this University a bad name. After years of tough talk about cracking down on alcohol consumption UF gets ranked #1 party school and the administration sees the 70's coming back to plow it down like a drunk driver. They are actively trying to relegate the Greek community to the dark corners of campus life in hopes of polishing UF's image. So it would be good for them to depower the Gator Party. This would take away some of the carrots the Greek system dangles in front of potential recruits. When all you have to offer foe example is a soccer team, alcohol, and repressed homosexuality (in SigEps case) you attract lower caliber individuals and the All-Greek GPA drops to a level that the administration can use to justify throwing your drunk asses off campus.

Gone are the days of influential alumni protecting the fraternity system. The Pikes have some very smart, very rich, and very powerful and connected alumni and they are... *gasp*.... POWERLESS to stop the administration from keeping Pike from being active.

Also the BOG is not now and will not for the foreseeable future be stacked with Keys.

By my count 4/17 are from UF and of those four two are women which means if they are keys they are ex post facto Keys.

What does this mean? Well the Trustees of UF answer to the BOG who are not sympathetic to UF, UF's Greek Life or FBK.

Can you feel the hammer coming down? Because I can.

is there any proof the arrests actually happened? its not on the GPD website...

But if they are removed from their slate, then Gator should not be able to replace them.

What about these rumors that the J Loh and JJ sections of the Jardon's shit file were given to Goldberger in exchange for throwing the fall election?

"All five students were issued a court date and a notice to appear, said GPD Lt. Keith Kameg."

I'd say it happened.

Yeah, underage drinking is the easiest thing in the world to make go away, though. Sign one form, don't get caught doing anything for six months or so, and it never even goes on your permanent record.

First off, to those that think that this was just 5 Gator party members and that party should not be held accountable... open your eyes. Every student organization leader on this campus is quite aware of the repercussions of drinking underage. Every leader on this campus knows the consequences it carries, and the responsibility they hold. By breaking the law, they are making a concious effort to devalue the respect given to the students of the University.

A party is supposed to function just like an organization according to the laws and statutes of the school.

These leaders need to face the consequences of their actions and step down. By not doing so, they are setting an example for all student leaders on this campus that they are not responsible to act appropriately.

I think that if they don't, then PTI should give them the same ax that she would give any other student leader caught in this position.

Look, I'm not saying that student don't drink. I'm not saying that they shouldn't. But these are the leaders of the school, and when they can't even make a simple good choice on a weeknight or hold the respect of the administration, how can we expect them to effectively advocate on behalf of the students?

And Duque, Gator should be able to fill those seats again if they open. There's a constitution and statutes for a reason. You can't just spit out new rules and suggestions that you think are fair (not to say they are not).

Re: Johnson & Grove, there is no way Tommy would out that. He wouldn't use sexual orientation as a weapon against a fellow republican -- even a useless one. Ben and his partners are safe.

Tommy would sell out anyone for anything. Especially Ben, who, by all rights, is a more successful Republican than Tommy could ever hope to be.
